Arch Auto Parts resurfaces all sizes solid or single mass flywheels.(Arch does not resurface dual-mass flywheels.) *
Arch Auto Parts experts will carefully resurface single-mass flywheels of any size, grinding and smoothing it to restore optimal performance. Using a flywheel grinding machine and other specialized tools and equipment, Arch will measure the flywheel to make sure it is within tolerance before smoothing process begins, carefully smooth the flywheel to remove uneven wear and minor cupping and inspect the surface carefully after resurfacing.
Arch Auto Parts does not diagnose repairs needed, or remove or reinstall parts. However, if you have a flywheel that needs resurfacing, Arch is happy to provide the extra support busy repair shops and DIY customers need to complete their service and repairs quickly, safely and economically.
What is a flywheel and what does it do?
Flywheels serve multiple essential purposes in most vehicles, including working with the ring gear to turn the engine’s crankshaft during initial starting and distributing energy evenly for the vehicle in motion. With its precisely weighted and balanced disc, the flywheel collects energy produced intermittently by the piston cycles – and releases the energy evenly to keep the crankshaft moving smoothly between combustion cycles. The flywheel also holds rotational energy during gear changes, to provide smooth operation.
Flywheels also serve another important purpose as these large discs are used to transfer torque power produced by the engine through the transmission – to the rest of the drive train to turn the wheels. Together with the clutch, the flywheel also provides a way to interrupt the power flow.
Over time, heat can warp the flywheel and create hard spots, affecting drivability. Arch Auto Parts experts resurface flywheels to restore the smooth, level and balanced surface needed to regain smooth operation.
When do you need to have your flywheel resurfaced?
Symptoms you may need to have your flywheel resurfaced include the following:
– Always resurface the flywheel when you are working on the clutch. Many clutch manufacturers require that the flywheel be resurfaced when the clutch is replaced, in order to honor the clutch warranty.
– Discoloration or Glazing These are signs of wear and can cause the clutch to slip. Resurfacing the flywheel can help restore the appropriate, smooth surface.
– Signs of uneven wear, or cupping. Cupping is caused by the clutch pressing down on the flywheel, causing uneven wear. If cupping is relatively minor, this problem can often be helped by flywheel resurfacing.
– If the flywheel is cracked, it is unsafe to use, and should NOT be resurfaced. It needs to be replaced with a new flywheel.
Arch Auto Parts does NOT service dual mass flywheels.
This video shows the flywheel resurfacing process, with the cover of machine removed. It was not filmed at Arch but is very similar to what we do.
